A friend gifted me an iCade controller for Christmas one year, without realizing that I didn’t have an iPad to use it with. Instead of throwing out the iCade, I re-purposed it into a portable arcade console.
The iCade actually uses high quality, standard arcade buttons and joysticks, which made it very easy to hook up to a Raspberry Pi. I removed the internal bluetooth unit, soldered the buttons up to the Pi’s GPIO, and flashed a RetroPie image to the SD card. After some mild configuring, I had an HDMI compatible console that would play almost every arcade title up until the early 2000’s.
